SHERYL COHEN performs throughout the United States, Europe, South America, and Asia as a soloist, and chamber artist. She appears as frequent soloist with orchestras in Peru, Ecuador, Brazil, Argentina, and the United States. In addition, she has been featured at many of the National Flute Association national conventions, including those in Washington D. C., Chicago, San Diego, Los Angeles, St. Louis, and Phoenix, as well as various regional flute festivals. She has performed in Carnegie Weill Recital Hall, has been a guest artist with Atlanta based Thamyris Contemporary Ensemble in Hans Werner Henze’s El Cimarron, and has been on the artist faculty at SongFest in California, and at the Festival Institute at Round Top.

Cohen presents courses and master classes at home, in Europe, including Sweden at the Royal College of Music and the Flötmani summer course, throughout South America, and in China at the Shanghai and Beijing Conservatories. Cohen began her teaching career as the flute professor at the University of Toledo and is Professor Emerita at the University of Alabama. Her book Bel Canto Flute: The Rampal School won the 2004 Newly Publish Music Competition and is hailed as “one of the most rigorously organized, well-thought-out and creatively written pedagogical books of the last half-century.”

 

Formerly, Cohen performed as principal flutist with the Toledo Symphony, the Toledo Opera Association, and the Tuscaloosa Symphony Orchestra, performing under the batons of such people as Julius Rudel, Anton Guadano, Louis Lane, Ransom Wilson, Shinik Hahn, and Serge Fournier.

 

Cohen began her studies with Albert Tipton at the Aspen Music School. She earned the BM and MM degrees at the University of Michigan under Nelson Hauenstein, and the DM degree at the Florida State University with Albert Tipton. Throughout many years, she studied in France under the illuminating guidance of Jean-Pierre Rampal and Alain Marion.
